Take-home whitening is a clinically supervised way to lighten the teeth gradually in your own time. Rather than a single high-strength session in the surgery, it uses custom-made trays and a lower-concentration peroxide gel applied over a series of days or weeks, which many people find gentle and easy to control. The clinic provides the whitening gel and instructions on how long to wear the trays each day and for how many days to continue, and the shade lightens progressively over that period. As with any whitening, the gel works on natural tooth structure and will not alter the colour of existing fillings, crowns or veneers, and a check-up beforehand is advisable so that any decay or sensitivity is addressed first.
