Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin in the hair follicle with selective photothermolysis — the laser's energy is absorbed preferentially by the pigment in the follicle, heating and destroying it while leaving the surrounding skin intact. Because the laser only affects actively growing follicles (anagen phase), a course of multiple sessions is needed to capture all follicles at their most vulnerable stage.
