Laser hair removal works by directing pulses of light at the hair follicle, where the energy is absorbed by melanin (the pigment in the hair) and converted to heat that disables the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Because a follicle is most vulnerable during its active growth phase and only a portion of hairs are in that phase at any time, the treatment is repeated over a course of sessions to progressively reduce hair across an area. At the clinic the area is cleansed and shaved if needed, eye protection is worn, and a cooling mechanism helps protect and soothe the skin as each pulse is delivered; the sensation is usually a quick warm snap.
