This programme evaluates the eye as a complete optical and anatomical system, screening for conditions that can cause progressive vision loss if undetected — glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts among the most common. Visual acuity and refraction testing establish baseline clarity and whether corrective lenses are needed or require updating. Ophthalmoscopy provides direct visualisation of the retina, optic nerve head, and retinal vasculature — structures that reflect not only eye health but also systemic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. The slit-lamp examination evaluates the anterior structures of the eye including the cornea, iris, and lens at high magnification, identifying cataracts, corneal abnormalities, and inflammatory changes. Tonometry measures intraocular pressure, the primary modifiable risk factor for glaucoma. Elevated pressure does not always produce symptoms until significant optic nerve damage has occurred, making routine screening essential for early detection. Campimetry (visual field testing) maps peripheral and central vision, identifying blind spots or visual field defects that may indicate glaucoma or neurological conditions. Eyelid and extraocular muscle examination assesses the mechanical components of eye function — lid position, tear film adequacy, and the coordination of the six muscles that control eye movement.
