This programme addresses the two most important areas of preventive gynaecological care: cervical screening and breast assessment. By combining both in a single appointment, it provides a practical approach to the investigations that current screening guidelines recommend for women. Cervical cytology (a smear test) collects cells from the cervix for microscopic evaluation, screening for pre-cancerous changes and human papillomavirus-related abnormalities. Early detection at this stage allows intervention before cervical cancer develops, making it one of the most effective cancer prevention tests available. The breast component uses two complementary modalities. Bilateral mammography is the established screening standard, effective at detecting microcalcifications and dense lesions. Breast ultrasound adds particular value for women with dense breast tissue, where mammographic sensitivity is reduced — ultrasound can identify masses that mammography misses in this population. The combination of both modalities provides more thorough coverage than either alone. Transvaginal ultrasound evaluates the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures with high resolution. It can identify ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometrial thickening, and other structural abnormalities that may be relevant to symptoms such as irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, or fertility concerns. A specialist gynaecological consultation provides clinical context, integrates all findings, and recommends any follow-up that may be warranted. This programme is well suited for an annual gynaecological assessment.
