Root canal treatment carried out under a dental microscope to clean, disinfect and seal the inside of a tooth whose nerve has become inflamed or infected, allowing the tooth to be saved rather than extracted. Magnification helps the dentist find and treat the fine root canals accurately. Re-treatment is available for teeth that need a previous root filling redone, and a protective crown is usually advised afterwards.
About this treatment
Root canal (endodontic) treatment is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp, which contains the nerve and blood supply — becomes inflamed or infected, often through deep decay, a crack or trauma.
