The basic sports medicine examination serves as the entry-level pre-participation screening for individuals who need medical clearance for sport — either as a regulatory requirement for club or competition membership, or as personal due diligence before significantly increasing their training load. The assessment is conducted by a sports medicine physician and covers the key safety checks that can be completed without a physical stress test: a structured family history review (with particular attention to cardiac events, sudden death in relatives, and genetic conditions relevant to sport), a thorough physical examination including cardiopulmonary auscultation, a 12-lead resting EKG interpreted by the examining physician, and blood pressure measurement in multiple positions if indicated. The examination concludes with a formal medical fitness certificate (zdravotní způsobilost ke sportovní činnosti) that is accepted by Czech sports federations and clubs. The certificate documents the physician's findings and clearance decision, which may be unconditional, conditional on follow-up, or withheld pending further investigation if the examination raises concerns. The basic examination is appropriate for children under 140 cm (for whom ergometry protocols are less standardised), recreational athletes participating in lower-cardiovascular-demand sports, and individuals without cardiac risk factors who are entering their first structured training environment.
