The Russian lips technique uses hyaluronic acid filler placed vertically through the lip to build height and projection at the centre without significant forward volume expansion, creating a flat, doll-like profile with a pronounced Cupid's bow.
The Russian lips technique is a specialised hyaluronic acid filler method that produces a distinct aesthetic outcome from conventional lip augmentation. While standard lip filling focuses on adding forward volume to create fuller-looking lips in profile, the Russian technique is designed to increase the vertical height of the upper lip and sharpen the Cupid's bow architecture, resulting in a more graphic, lifted appearance with less forward projection. The key difference lies in injection placement. In the Russian technique, filler is deposited in multiple small boluses positioned vertically within the lip tissue — from the wet-dry border upward toward the vermilion — rather than horizontally along the body of the lip. This distributes the product in a way that lifts the lip and exaggerates the central peaks of the upper lip (the Cupid's bow points) while leaving the philtrum columns and columella of the nose unaffected. The result is a characteristic shape: a very defined, almost geometric Cupid's bow, a flat lip surface in profile, and moderate width without the rounded pout of conventional augmentation. The procedure requires precise anatomical knowledge of the lip's layered anatomy and careful volume control per injection point to avoid overfilling, which would collapse the vertical result into a round shape. Topical anaesthetic is applied before treatment, and the procedure involves a higher number of smaller injection points than standard lip filler, making practitioner skill and product selection particularly important to the outcome. Swelling after Russian lips can be more pronounced than after conventional augmentation because of the higher number of puncture sites. Final results are best assessed at two weeks once swelling has fully resolved. Duration of results is typically six to nine months, and the technique can be repeated to maintain the look over time.
