The procedure applies a professionally formulated hydrogen peroxide gel to the teeth, activated by the ZOOM light to accelerate the bleaching process. Gums are protected with a rubber coating throughout the session. Results are immediate and can last 1–3 years depending on dietary habits (coffee, tea, red wine) and oral hygiene maintenance. Take-home Opalescence kits provide a more gradual, cost-effective alternative. Impressions are taken to fabricate custom-fitted bleaching trays, which are loaded with Opalescence carbamide peroxide gel for daily home use over approximately two weeks. The custom fit ensures even gel distribution and reduces the risk of gum irritation compared to over-the-counter strip products. Both options are suitable for patients with healthy teeth and gums free of active decay. Teeth whitening is not Medisave claimable, but 0% instalment plans are available for the in-clinic option. Patients with heavy dental restorations or crowns are advised that whitening affects natural tooth structure only — restoration replacement may be needed for colour matching.
