CT Coronary Calcium Score (CT Calciumscore)

Type

Coronary Calcium Score

Duration

30 min

Non-contrast, low-dose cardiac CT producing an Agatston score for coronary calcium — a validated cardiovascular risk predictor. Managed by CCN cardiologists who present results and advise on next steps. Approximately €235. No referral required.

The CT coronary calcium score (CT Calciumscore) at Cardiologie Centra Nederland Amsterdam uses a non-contrast, low-dose CT acquisition to image the four major coronary vessels and quantify calcified atherosclerotic plaque. The result is expressed as an Agatston score, validated in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) as the international standard for non-invasive coronary plaque assessment. The clinical value lies in its ability to reclassify cardiovascular risk in intermediate-probability patients — for example, those with a Framingham 10-year risk of 7–20% where statin therapy decisions are uncertain. A score of zero essentially removes the patient from short-term statin consideration; a score above 100 or above the 75th percentile for age and sex significantly upgrades risk and supports aggressive prevention. Both ESC and ACC/AHA prevention guidelines recognise calcium scoring as a decision-modifying tool. The scan itself takes five minutes. Total clinic visit is approximately 30 minutes including patient intake, brief ECG gating check, the scan, and cardiologist results presentation. No fasting or contrast required. No breath-hold beyond a brief single apnoea. CCN's Amsterdam Slotervaart clinic is at Louwesweg 6 in Nieuw-West, accessible by tram lines 7 and 17 and multiple bus connections from Centraal. Classified as an extra onderzoek — self-pay, not covered by Dutch basisverzekering.
