CT enterography (also called selective small bowel CT) at Buda Health Center uses a combination of oral contrast distension and intravenous contrast to provide detailed visualisation of the small intestine — the portion of the gut that is inaccessible to conventional push endoscopy in its mid-sections. At 69,000 HUF (approximately €173), this is a well-established cross-sectional investigation for a range of small bowel disorders. The examination requires preparation: the patient drinks a large volume of low-density oral contrast — typically 1.5 to 2 litres over 45–60 minutes before the scan — to distend and fill the small bowel loops, separating them for clear evaluation. Intravenous contrast is then administered during the CT acquisition to opacify the bowel wall and detect the mural enhancement patterns that characterise active inflammatory disease, ischaemia, or neoplasm. CT enterography is the recommended cross-sectional imaging technique for known or suspected Crohn's disease. It identifies active inflammation through mural enhancement, bowel wall thickening, comb sign, and mesenteric fat stranding. It also detects the complications of Crohn's disease — fibrotic strictures that cause obstruction, penetrating disease leading to fistulas and abscesses, and extraintestinal manifestations. In clinical practice, it guides decisions between medical escalation and surgical intervention. Beyond Crohn's disease, the examination is used for evaluation of small bowel tumours including gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs), carcinoid tumours, lymphoma, and adenocarcinoma. It is also indicated for malabsorption workup when coeliac disease complications or other enteropathies are suspected, and for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding when capsule endoscopy and push enteroscopy have not provided a diagnosis.
