RF microneedling at Bona Dea combines two established skin rejuvenation mechanisms — microneedling and radiofrequency energy — into a single device that delivers both simultaneously. Gold-plated insulated needles penetrate the skin to adjustable depths (typically 0.5mm to 3.5mm depending on the treatment zone), and once at the target depth, the device emits bipolar radiofrequency energy from the needle tips directly into the dermis. This heats the dermal tissue to 55-65°C at the point of delivery, triggering collagen denaturation and a wound-healing cascade that produces new collagen and elastin over the following weeks. The insulated needle design is a key technical distinction: because only the tips conduct RF energy, the epidermis and superficial dermis are protected from thermal damage. This allows the physician to deliver therapeutic heating to the deep dermis without the epidermal burns, prolonged redness, or pigmentation changes that can occur with non-insulated or surface-delivered RF devices — making the treatment safer for all skin types, including Fitzpatrick IV-VI. A full-face treatment takes approximately 45 minutes including preparation. Topical anaesthetic cream is applied for 20-30 minutes beforehand to minimise discomfort. During the procedure, the physician adjusts needle depth and energy levels for each facial zone: deeper and higher energy on the cheeks and jawline where skin is thicker, shallower and gentler around the periorbital area and forehead. Patients experience a brief stamping or prickling sensation with each pulse. Post-treatment, the skin appears red and mildly swollen, similar to moderate sunburn. This typically resolves within 24-48 hours. Micro-crusting at the needle-entry points may occur and clears within 3-5 days. Results become visible from 4 to 6 weeks as new collagen forms, with progressive improvement over 3 months.
