Aqualyx injection lipolysis — a non-surgical fat reduction treatment using deoxycholic acid-based solution injected into localised fat deposits. Each ampoule treats a small defined area, dissolving adipocytes permanently.

Aqualyx is an injectable fat-dissolving solution developed by Professor Pasquale Motolese in Italy, based on a modified form of deoxycholic acid — a bile acid naturally produced by the liver to emulsify dietary fat. When injected directly into subcutaneous adipose tissue, Aqualyx disrupts the cell membranes of adipocytes (fat cells), causing them to release their lipid contents. The liquefied fat is then processed by the body's lymphatic system and metabolised through the liver over the following weeks. At Bona Dea, Aqualyx is used to treat stubborn localised fat deposits that resist diet and exercise — common treatment areas include the submental region (double chin), jowls, bra fat, upper arms, inner knees, love handles, and small abdominal pockets. The treatment is specifically designed for localised fat reduction, not weight loss; ideal candidates are at or near their target body weight but have discrete fat pads they wish to reduce. Each Aqualyx ampoule (8ml of solution) covers a treatment area of approximately 5cm x 5cm. The number of ampoules per session depends on the size of the area — a double chin may require 2 to 3 ampoules, while larger body areas may need 4 to 5. The physician injects the solution through a fine needle or cannula using a fanning technique to distribute it evenly throughout the fat layer. Local anaesthetic (lidocaine) is mixed with the Aqualyx or injected separately beforehand. Post-injection, the treated area swells significantly — this is expected and indicates the solution is active. Swelling, redness, firmness, and tenderness persist for 3 to 7 days, with some patients experiencing a warm, tingling sensation for the first 24 hours. Results become apparent from 4 to 6 weeks as the dissolved fat is cleared. Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for the treated area to reach the desired contour. Fat cells destroyed by Aqualyx do not regenerate, so results are considered permanent provided the patient maintains a stable weight.
