Whole Body MRI — Cancer Screening

Type

MRI Scan

Duration

1 hour

Biograph's whole body MRI scan is performed as part of every annual membership visit, reviewed by a panel of multi-subspecialty radiologists for early detection of cancer and other silent pathology. The scan images organs across the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis without ionising radiation. Brain MRI components include white matter screening and cerebral aneurysm screening. Additional cardiovascular imaging (CCTA, CAC score, AI plaque analysis) is available in the Black membership tier.

Whole body MRI at Biograph is a high-field MRI screening protocol conducted annually as a core component of the membership assessment programme. Unlike a targeted diagnostic MRI ordered to investigate a known symptom, Biograph's whole body MRI is a surveillance scan designed to detect incidental and pre-symptomatic findings across multiple organ systems simultaneously — the lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, abdominal aorta, retroperitoneum, and pelvis. The imaging is reviewed by a team of multi-subspecialty radiologists — rather than a single generalist — each reviewing the organ systems within their specialty domain, which may reduce the risk of missed findings compared to single-reader reporting. This subspecialty review model is particularly relevant for rarer incidental findings in abdominal organs where a general radiologist may have lower sensitivity. The brain MRI components delivered as part of the assessment include white matter hyperintensity screening — relevant for identifying early cerebrovascular disease, silent lacunar infarcts, and neurodegeneration risk — and cerebral aneurysm screening via magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Because MRI uses no ionising radiation, the scan can be repeated annually without accumulating radiation dose — unlike CT-based protocols. Black members receive additional cardiovascular imaging: CT coronary artery calcium scoring, coronary CT angiography for detailed arterial plaque assessment, AI-powered coronary plaque characterisation, and a low-dose lung CT for lung cancer screening. This imaging stack collectively covers the major sites and mechanisms of early-onset serious disease detectable before symptoms develop. Approximately one in six Biograph members is reported to receive an urgent or life-altering finding from their annual assessment programme, with the MRI contributing significantly to those discoveries.
