DEXA Body Composition Analysis

DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) body composition scanning is included in all Biograph membership tiers. The scan provides precise segmental measurements of total body fat percentage, regional lean muscle mass, bone mineral density (BMD), and visceral adipose tissue — the metabolically active fat depot most closely associated with cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk. Results are reviewed by the medical team and integrated with metabolic blood panels and physical performance testing.

Biograph's DEXA body composition scan uses dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to produce a precise, low-radiation quantification of body composition that goes beyond BMI or bioelectrical impedance in both accuracy and clinical detail. The scan differentiates three tissue types — fat mass, lean (fat-free) mass, and bone mineral density — at the whole-body level and in specific regional segments (arms, legs, trunk, and android/gynoid zones). Of particular clinical relevance is the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) measurement: DEXA can estimate the volume of visceral fat surrounding the intra-abdominal organs, a compartment that is metabolically active and associated with insulin resistance, systemic inflammation, dyslipidaemia, and elevated cardiovascular risk independently of total body fat percentage. Bone mineral density measurement at the lumbar spine and femoral neck allows Biograph's physicians to identify sub-clinical osteopenia or early osteoporosis that would not be apparent from symptoms alone, enabling earlier dietary, supplement, and exercise interventions before fracture risk becomes clinically significant. The lean mass segmental data feeds directly into exercise optimisation consultations — identifying asymmetries between limbs and tracking muscle mass trajectories that may indicate sarcopenic risk over successive annual visits. DEXA at Biograph is interpreted in the context of the member's full assessment profile, including VO₂ max, grip strength, movement analysis, and metabolic blood panels, to build a composite musculoskeletal and metabolic risk picture. The scan takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes and exposes the subject to a very low radiation dose equivalent to a fraction of a standard chest X-ray.
