Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) at Beverly Hills Hair Restoration is a non-surgical cosmetic tattooing technique performed using specialised tricopigmentation microneedles that deposit pigment into the upper dermis of the scalp to replicate the visual appearance of hair follicles. Unlike standard cosmetic tattoo pigments, tricopigmentation uses semi-permanent pigments specifically formulated to maintain colour stability in the scalp environment without turning blue or green over time — a common issue with conventional tattoo inks on the scalp. The procedure is performed by trained SMP practitioners under Dr Kahen's clinical direction, using fine-gauge needles to create thousands of tiny pigmented dots matched to the patient's natural hair colour, each calibrated in size, depth, and spacing to mimic a real cropped follicle as viewed at the scalp surface. The primary applications of SMP at BHHR include: creating the visual impression of a full shaved head for patients with extensive hair loss (male pattern baldness grade V–VII), where no transplant donor supply is sufficient for meaningful coverage; adding the illusion of density to areas of diffuse thinning in patients who retain some hair but have visible scalp show-through; concealing the linear donor scar from a previous FUT/SmartFUT® procedure; and improving the visual result of a previous transplant by filling in lower-density zones.
