Q-switched laser removal targets tattoo and permanent-makeup pigment with extremely short, powerful pulses of light. The energy is absorbed by the ink and shatters it into microscopic fragments without significantly damaging the surrounding skin; the body's immune system then gradually carries those fragments away, so the mark fades over the weeks after each session. Before treatment the area is cleansed and, where helpful, numbing cream is applied, as the pulses can feel like a sharp elastic snap. A session is usually quick — from a few minutes for a small tattoo or brow up to longer for larger pieces. Afterwards the skin may be red, slightly swollen or form a light scab, and aftercare focuses on keeping the area clean, moisturised and protected from the sun.
