Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: the laser emits a wavelength of light that is preferentially absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair shaft and follicle. Because hair grows in cycles and the laser is most effective on follicles in their active growth phase, a course of sessions is needed to treat each area as its hairs cycle through that stage.
