DYE-VL (Dye Variable Light) is a refined form of intense pulsed-light therapy that uses a precisely controlled band of light to address colour-related skin concerns. The light energy is absorbed by the pigment in sun spots and freckling and by the haemoglobin in dilated superficial vessels and diffuse redness; that energy is converted to heat, which breaks down excess pigment so it can flake away and helps reduce the appearance of redness, gradually evening out the complexion and improving radiance. After the skin is cleansed and protective eyewear fitted, a cool gel is applied and the handpiece delivers pulses of light across the area; most people feel a brief warm snap with each pulse. A session usually lasts around twenty to thirty minutes depending on the zone. Pigmented spots often darken briefly before flaking off over the following days, and the skin may be slightly pink for a short time; sun protection afterwards is essential. Because pigment and redness clear in stages, a course of several sessions spaced a few weeks apart generally gives the most even, refreshed result, and improvements continue between sessions. The treatment can be focused on individual discoloured spots or on whole zones such as the forehead, full face, neck, décolletage or hands.
