BroadBand Light (BBL) photorejuvenation treatment for the face using Sciton's BBL platform. Delivers pulsed broadband light energy across multiple wavelengths to target pigmentation, vascular lesions, and stimulate dermal collagen renewal for overall skin tone improvement.
BroadBand Light (BBL) by Sciton is an advanced intense pulsed light (IPL) platform that delivers non-coherent, polychromatic light across a broad spectrum of wavelengths, with interchangeable cut-off filters that allow the practitioner to selectively target different chromophores in the skin. For photorejuvenation, the primary targets are melanin (responsible for brown spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation) and oxyhaemoglobin (responsible for redness, broken capillaries, and diffuse facial flushing). By selecting the appropriate filter and adjusting the energy fluence, pulse duration, and cooling parameters, the practitioner can address both pigmentary and vascular concerns in the same session. The mechanism of action is selective photothermolysis: the light energy is preferentially absorbed by the target chromophore, converting to heat that damages the target structure while sparing surrounding tissue. Melanin-containing cells in pigmented lesions absorb the shorter wavelengths, heat up, and fragment — the darkened fragments are then shed through natural epidermal turnover over 7 to 14 days. Dilated blood vessels absorb the longer wavelengths, coagulate, and are gradually reabsorbed by the body over 2 to 4 weeks. Beyond the targeted chromophore effects, BBL produces a global skin rejuvenation response. The thermal energy delivered to the dermis stimulates fibroblast activity and upregulates collagen gene expression. Peer-reviewed research on BBL has demonstrated that regular treatments can alter gene expression patterns in treated skin, shifting the molecular profile toward that of younger skin — a finding unique among light-based treatments. This collagen-stimulating effect improves skin texture, reduces pore size, and enhances overall luminosity over a series of treatments. The treatment at BeauMED takes approximately 45 minutes for the full face. A chilled sapphire crystal on the BBL handpiece provides continuous contact cooling to protect the epidermis and minimise discomfort. Patients describe the sensation as a warm snapping or rubber-band flick with each pulse. Immediately after treatment, the skin may appear pink and pigmented spots may darken temporarily — this darkening is a positive indicator that the melanin has been effectively targeted. The darkened spots flake off naturally over the following week, revealing clearer skin beneath. A series of 3 to 5 sessions spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart is recommended for comprehensive photorejuvenation, with annual maintenance sessions to sustain results.
