Barwon Health is a major public health service based at University Hospital Geelong on Bellerine Street, serving the Greater Geelong region of Victoria and surrounding communities. Founded in 1998, it is one of Australia's largest and most comprehensive regional health services, encompassing acute and subacute hospitals, community health, aged care, and mental health. The Barwon Medical Imaging (BMI) department is co-located at the University Hospital Geelong campus and operates two Siemens MRI scanners — a 1.5 Tesla and a 3.0 Tesla unit — for diagnostic imaging referrals. All Medicare-eligible imaging is bulk-billed with no out-of-pocket costs for patients presenting with a valid referral. The on-site Geelong Bone Density Department, situated in the Douglas Hocking Research Institute within the hospital precinct, is a dedicated bone densitometry service offering DEXA scans using three calibrated scanners, staffed by accredited technologists and supported by on-site endocrinologists. The department performs over 6,000 scans per year and participates in pharmaceutical trials for osteoporosis. Both services are GP referral-based and operate Monday to Friday.
