Scaling & Root Planing (Gum Treatment)

A deeper, periodontology-led cleaning for patients with gum disease, in which plaque and tartar are removed from below the gum line and the root surfaces are smoothed so the gums can reattach and heal. Performed by a periodontology-trained dentist, root planing (closed curettage) targets the pockets that form when gum disease progresses. It is the core non-surgical treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis and a particular focus of the clinic.

Scaling and root planing — sometimes called closed curettage — is the main non-surgical treatment for gum disease and an area in which ArtiSmile specialises. When gum inflammation is left untreated, the gum separates from the tooth and forms pockets where bacteria and hardened tartar accumulate below the gum line, gradually damaging the bone that holds teeth in place. In this procedure the clinician carefully cleans deep beneath the gum and planes (smooths) the exposed root surfaces so that bacteria have fewer places to cling and the gum tissue can tighten back against the tooth. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthesia — the clinic uses a computer-controlled system designed to make injections more comfortable — and may be done by area over one or more visits depending on how widespread the disease is. Mild soreness and sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal. The goal is to halt the progression of periodontitis, reduce bleeding and pocket depth, and preserve the natural teeth; results depend on good home care and regular maintenance cleanings. Because this work is led by a dentist with a periodontology specialisation, more advanced cases can also be assessed for recession coverage or regenerative procedures, which the clinic offers separately.
