A deeper, periodontology-led cleaning for patients with gum disease, in which plaque and tartar are removed from below the gum line and the root surfaces are smoothed so the gums can reattach and heal. Performed by a periodontology-trained dentist, root planing (closed curettage) targets the pockets that form when gum disease progresses. It is the core non-surgical treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis and a particular focus of the clinic.
