The dentist checks your teeth and gums first so the approach suits your enamel and expectations.

Tooth whitening lightens the natural shade of the teeth using a peroxide-based gel that breaks down stains within the enamel and dentine. At ArtisMed it is offered two ways. With the take-home (overlay) method the dentist takes impressions and makes custom-fitted trays; you wear them with a supplied gel for a set period each day over a couple of weeks, whitening gradually and in control of the final shade. The in-office route uses a stronger gel activated by a Beyond lamp to accelerate the effect during a single appointment, which suits patients who want a faster result. A separate internal-whitening technique is used for one tooth that has darkened after root canal treatment: bleaching agent is sealed inside the tooth to lighten it from within, avoiding a crown or veneer in many cases. Before any whitening, the dentist examines your teeth and gums and usually recommends a hygiene clean first, as whitening works best on a clean surface and is not applied over untreated decay or gum disease. Short-lived sensitivity to cold can occur and settles within a day or two. Results may last from several months to a couple of years depending on diet and habits such as coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and can be topped up with the take-home trays. Whitening is suited to adults with healthy teeth wanting a brighter smile; it does not change the colour of existing fillings, veneers or crowns, which may need replacing to match.
