Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose inner pulp has become irreversibly inflamed or infected. Endodontic (root canal) treatment is needed when the soft tissue inside a tooth — the pulp, which contains its nerve and blood supply — becomes irreversibly inflamed or dies, usually through deep decay, a crack or trauma. Left untreated this can cause severe toothache and abscesses. Rather than removing the tooth, root canal treatment cleans out the diseased pulp, disinfects and shapes the fine canals inside the roots, and seals them, allowing the tooth to stay in function. Front teeth typically have a single canal while molars have several, which is why multi-canal treatment can take longer; some teeth are completed in one visit and others over two. Once the canals are sealed the tooth is rebuilt — a back tooth that has lost a lot of structure is often best protected with a crown to prevent it cracking, which the dentist will discuss. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and settles. A well-treated and properly restored root-canal tooth can last for many years.
