About this treatment
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance — typically used when a tooth is badly broken down, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment and needs protecting from fracture. Treatment usually takes two stages. First the dentist prepares the tooth or teeth, takes impressions and fits a temporary restoration while the laboratory makes the crown or bridge; at the second visit the fit, bite and shade are checked and the restoration is cemented in place.
