The DEXA bone density scan at Arden Endocrinology is a precise, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that measures bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry technology. It is the gold standard method for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia, and for quantifying the risk of fracture in patients with low bone mass. During the scan, you will lie on a padded table while a scanner arm passes slowly over your body. The procedure is painless and typically takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the areas being assessed. Standard measurement sites include the lumbar spine and the proximal femur (hip), which are the most clinically relevant locations for predicting osteoporotic fracture risk. The test delivers an extremely low radiation dose — approximately 0.001 mSv — which is far lower than a standard chest X-ray and comparable to the background radiation received over a few hours. No injections or special preparation beyond stopping calcium supplements for 24 hours beforehand are required. Results are reported as a T-score (comparison to a healthy young adult reference population) and a Z-score (comparison to age-matched peers). The endocrinologist will review these results with you and, if needed, recommend treatment options such as calcium and vitamin D supplementation, bisphosphonate therapy, or lifestyle modifications. DEXA scanning is indicated for postmenopausal women, men over 70, individuals with risk factors for bone loss (including long-term corticosteroid use, early menopause, or a history of fragility fractures), and patients already on osteoporosis treatment to monitor response. Results are typically available within a few days, with a follow-up consultation scheduled to discuss findings and formulate a management plan.
