DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone density scanning assesses bone mineral density at the hip and spine using very low-dose X-rays. Results help diagnose osteoporosis, assess fracture risk, and monitor treatment progress.
About this treatment
The DEXA bone density scan at Arden Endocrinology is a precise, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that measures bone mineral density (BMD) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry technology. It is the gold standard method for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia, and for quantifying the risk of fracture in patients with low bone mass.
During the scan, you will lie on a padded table while a scanner arm passes slowly over your body. The procedure is painless and typically takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the areas being assessed. Standard measurement sites include the lumbar spine and the proximal femur (hip), which are the most clinically relevant locations for predicting osteoporotic fracture risk.
The test delivers an extremely low radiation dose — approximately 0.001 mSv — which is far lower than a standard chest X-ray and comparable to the background radiation received over a few hours. No injections or special preparation beyond stopping calcium supplements for 24 hours beforehand are required.
