A bridge is a fixed restoration that spans the space left by one or more missing teeth. In its conventional form the teeth on each side of the gap are prepared and crowned, and these crowns are joined to one or more false teeth (pontics) in between to form a single rigid unit that is cemented permanently in place. Filling the gap is associated with restoring chewing and speech, maintaining the appearance of a complete smile, and stopping the neighbouring and opposing teeth from drifting or over-erupting into the space.
