Laser Hair Removal

Permanent hair reduction using a Candela GentleLase Pro-U alexandrite laser, one of the gold-standard systems for the 755 nm wavelength. The laser light is absorbed by pigment in the hair root and converted to heat, destroying follicles that are in their active growth phase. Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis: a precisely tuned beam of light is preferentially absorbed by the melanin pigment inside the hair shaft and follicle, where it converts to heat and disables the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Only follicles in the active (anagen) growth phase — roughly one in five at any given moment — are destroyed in a single pass, which is why a course of treatments spaced over time is needed to catch each follicle while it is growing. Treatment is carried out personally by the dermatologist, so each session begins with an assessment of skin type and hair colour. A typical course for the groin, underarms or calves is four to six sessions at regular intervals; results are permanent once a follicle is destroyed, although hair that was dormant during earlier sessions may appear and require touch-ups. The treatment is most effective on dark, coarse hair against lighter skin and does not work on light, grey or fine downy (lanugo) hair, since these lack the pigment the laser targets. Preparation is important: do not pluck or wax for several weeks beforehand because the root must be present, but shaving or trimming is fine and the area should be shaved closely on the day. Avoid lotions, creams and antiperspirant for twelve hours before, and note that a light tan is acceptable for diode lasers but not for the alexandrite system, where treating tanned skin raises the risk of burns. Afterwards, strict sun avoidance for two to three weeks and daily SPF 50+ are advised to protect the treated skin. Mild redness and a warm, prickling sensation around the follicles are normal and settle quickly. Suitability and any contraindications are reviewed by the doctor before the first session.
