Type
DEXA Scan
Duration
25 min
AKESO's bone densitometry service uses low-dose X-ray absorptiometry to measure bone mineral density at the lumbar spine and hip — the two sites most predictive of osteoporosis-related fracture risk. The 20–25 minute scan is painless, requires no special preparation, and delivers a written clinical report used to guide preventive treatment. Located in Building B, the service is particularly relevant for postmenopausal women, men and women over 65, those with a family history of osteoporosis, and patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy.
Bone densitometry, also called dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is the internationally accepted gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis. At AKESO POLIKLINIKA's Building B department, the scan measures bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine (L1–L4) and the proximal hip — the two anatomical sites most strongly associated with the fractures that cause serious long-term disability in older adults. The examination uses two very low doses of X-ray at different energy levels to distinguish bone tissue from soft tissue. The radiation exposure is substantially lower than that of a standard chest X-ray. Each measurement site takes only a few minutes, making the total session approximately 20–25 minutes. Results are expressed as a T-score (comparison to peak bone mass in a healthy 30-year-old) and a Z-score (comparison to age-matched norms). A T-score of –2.5 or below meets the WHO diagnostic threshold for osteoporosis; –1.0 to –2.5 indicates osteopenia (early bone loss). The written clinical report specifies which category applies and forms the basis for any subsequent pharmacological or lifestyle intervention. Bone densitometry at AKESO is indicated for postmenopausal women, men and women aged 65 or over, individuals with a first-degree relative who sustained a low-trauma fracture, patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy (prednisone ≥5 mg/day for more than three months), and those who have already sustained a fragility fracture and need baseline documentation before treatment. A doctor's referral is required. The department operates Monday to Friday, 8:30–15:30, and is located in Building B at Bucharova 1423/6.
