The take-home option involves a custom-made tray and professional-strength gel that you wear for a set period each day over a couple of weeks, whitening gradually and giving you control over the final shade. A professional clean beforehand is recommended so the gel works evenly on a plaque-free surface. Some people notice temporary sensitivity to cold during or just after whitening, which usually settles within a day or two; the dentist will advise on managing this and on foods and drinks to limit immediately afterwards to protect the new shade. Whitening lightens natural tooth structure but does not change the colour of fillings, crowns or veneers, so if you have restorations on visible teeth the dentist will discuss how to achieve an even result. Whitening is suitable for healthy adult teeth and gums; suitability is confirmed at examination, and it is not carried out during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
