Root Canal
Duration
2 hours
Root canal treatment carried out under a dental operating microscope, which magnifies and illuminates the inside of the tooth so the dentist can locate, clean and seal even fine or complex canals more precisely. It is particularly useful for narrow or curved canals, additional canals that are easy to miss, and re-treatment of teeth that were root-filled before. The added precision aims to give the treated tooth the best chance of long-term success.
Microscope-assisted endodontics applies high magnification and bright coaxial lighting to root canal treatment, giving the dentist a far clearer view of the tooth's internal anatomy than the naked eye allows. Many teeth have canals that are narrow, curved, calcified or simply hard to find, and molars in particular can hide additional canals that, if missed, leave infection behind. Working under the microscope helps the dentist identify and treat these canals thoroughly, which is associated with better outcomes for difficult cases. At Adent this approach is used both for primary treatment of complex teeth and for re-treatment — reopening and re-cleaning a tooth that was previously root-filled but has remained symptomatic or re-infected. As with standard root canal therapy the tooth is fully numbed, the diseased pulp tissue is removed, and the canal system is disinfected, shaped and sealed; the difference is the level of magnification and the precision it brings to locating and cleaning the canals. Because the work is more meticulous, microscope sessions can take longer and are priced slightly above standard treatment, again on a per-canal basis. Following treatment the tooth usually needs a permanent restoration, often a crown on heavily loaded back teeth, to protect it. The dentist will advise after examination and X-ray whether microscope-assisted treatment is appropriate for your tooth and what the likely sequence of visits will be. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
