A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. A dental crown restores a tooth that is too damaged, decayed or heavily filled to be repaired with a filling alone, by covering it entirely with a custom-made cap that takes over the tooth's shape and biting function. Crowns are commonly placed on teeth that have had root canal treatment — which leaves them more brittle — as well as on cracked or worn teeth, and they can also be used cosmetically to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth. Well-made crowns can last many years with good hygiene and regular check-ups; caring for the gum margin around the crown is important to its longevity.
