Dental Crowns (Porcelain & Zirconia)

Type

Crowns & Bridges

Duration

1 hour

A crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged, heavily filled or root-treated tooth, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. Adent offers porcelain-fused crowns and full zirconia crowns, the latter prized for its strength and natural translucency. Crowns are widely used to protect teeth after root canal treatment and to rebuild teeth too broken down for a simple filling, and are colour-matched to blend with your other teeth.

A dental crown restores a tooth that is too damaged, decayed or heavily filled to be repaired with a filling alone, by covering it entirely with a custom-made cap that takes over the tooth's shape and biting function. Crowns are commonly placed on teeth that have had root canal treatment — which leaves them more brittle — as well as on cracked or worn teeth, and they can also be used cosmetically to improve the appearance of a misshapen or discoloured tooth. At Adent crowns are offered in porcelain-fused and full zirconia materials. Porcelain-fused crowns combine a strong core with a tooth-coloured outer surface, while zirconia crowns are made from a very strong, durable ceramic that also offers a natural, slightly translucent appearance well suited to visible teeth. Treatment usually involves preparing (reshaping) the tooth so the crown fits over it, taking an impression or digital scan, and fitting the finished crown at a later visit, with a temporary crown protecting the tooth in between. The dentist matches the shade to your surrounding teeth so the result blends in. Choice of material depends on the tooth's position, how much biting force it takes and aesthetic priorities, and the dentist will recommend the most appropriate option after examination. Well-made crowns can last many years with good hygiene and regular check-ups; caring for the gum margin around the crown is important to its longevity. Crowns also form the visible part of an implant restoration and are used to anchor bridges where teeth are missing.
