Osteoporosis Blood Panel

Type

Blood Testing

Duration

30 min

A targeted blood panel for osteoporosis assessment covering Full Blood Count, Renal Function, calcium, and Vitamin D levels. Performed alongside the DEXA scan as part of a comprehensive bone health evaluation by orthopaedic specialists.

The osteoporosis blood panel at ACME Orthopaedics is a clinically targeted set of blood tests designed to complement the DEXA bone mineral density scan and provide a complete picture of a patient's bone health status. Rather than simply measuring bone density in isolation, this blood panel identifies the underlying metabolic and nutritional factors that drive or accelerate bone loss. The panel includes four key tests. The Full Blood Count (FBC) screens for anaemia and other haematological conditions that may be associated with chronic disease contributing to bone fragility. The Renal Function Test (RFT) assesses kidney health, as impaired renal function is a well-established risk factor for secondary osteoporosis — kidneys play a central role in activating Vitamin D and regulating calcium and phosphate balance. Calcium level testing directly measures serum calcium, which is the primary mineral component of bone matrix and is critical to maintaining bone strength. Finally, Vitamin D deficiency screening determines whether levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D are adequate, as Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption from the gut and its deficiency is one of the most prevalent and correctable contributors to osteoporosis worldwide. These four tests together allow the orthopaedic specialist to distinguish between primary osteoporosis (age- and hormone-related bone loss) and secondary osteoporosis caused by an underlying medical condition or nutritional deficiency. This distinction is clinically important because secondary causes are often treatable, and correcting them can halt or even reverse bone density decline. The blood panel is performed in the same session as the DEXA scan, making the screening process efficient and convenient. Results are reviewed by the specialist in the post-screening consultation, where they are interpreted alongside the DEXA T-score to build a comprehensive and personalised bone health management plan. This integrated approach ensures patients leave with actionable insights rather than raw data alone.
