Headache Relief 5P IV Infusion

Type

IV Vitamin Therapy

Duration

45 min

The Headache Relief infusion at 5P Medicine is a physician-directed IV treatment designed for migraine management and chronic tension headache relief, delivering magnesium, B-vitamins, anti-inflammatory and vascular-stabilising nutrients directly into the circulation for rapid effect. IV magnesium sulphate, the cornerstone of the formulation, is evidence-backed for acute migraine interruption and prophylaxis — hospital neurology departments use it for status migrainosus, and IV delivery achieves serum concentrations not reachable with oral supplementation. The treatment is physician-assessed and formulation-adjusted at each session based on headache pattern, medication history and relevant test findings.

Migraine and chronic headache disorders affect quality of life profoundly and are among the most undertreated conditions in functional medicine. Conventional management relies primarily on pharmacological prophylaxis (beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, CGRP antagonists) and acute rescue medications — an approach that treats the symptom without addressing the frequently identifiable biochemical drivers. Functional medicine research has identified several modifiable biochemical factors strongly associated with migraine susceptibility: 1. Magnesium deficiency: Estimated to affect 50–60% of migraine sufferers. Magnesium regulates NMDA receptor activity and cortical spreading depression — the wave of neurological dysfunction underlying migraine aura. IV magnesium sulphate has Level A evidence for acute migraine treatment from multiple meta-analyses. 2. Riboflavin (B2) deficiency: Mitochondrial dysfunction in cortical neurons is a well-established feature of migraine. B2 as a mitochondrial cofactor (FADH2 generation) has been shown in RCTs to reduce migraine frequency by 50% at high oral doses; IV delivery achieves therapeutic concentrations faster. 3. Coenzyme Q10 depletion: As for B2, CoQ10 addresses mitochondrial electron transport chain dysfunction in migraine-susceptible cortical neurons. Prophylactic CoQ10 has RCT evidence for migraine frequency reduction. 4. Cortical serotonin dysregulation: B6 and B12 (methylated forms for MTHFR-variant patients) support serotonin synthesis and metabolism; folate is required for tetrahydrobiopterin synthesis (essential for NO signalling and serotonin production). 5. Inflammatory triggers: High-sensitivity CRP and homocysteine are elevated in migraine patients compared to controls; magnesium and anti-inflammatory nutrients attenuate both. MUDr. Hora assesses each patient before every session, reviewing headache frequency and pattern, current medications, relevant blood tests (serum magnesium, B12, folate, CRP where available) and any dietary triggers identified through food intolerance testing. The formulation is then personalised, typically including IV magnesium sulphate (2–4g depending on tolerance and severity), B-complex, riboflavin (high-dose), methylcobalamin and methylfolate (particularly for MTHFR-variant patients), and optionally CoQ10 in an injectable form or vitamin C for anti-inflammatory coverage. The infusion is administered over 30–45 minutes. Patients with active migraine benefit from a quiet, dim room during administration — the clinic accommodates this on request. Some patients experience significant headache relief during or within one to two hours of the infusion; for chronic sufferers, regular monthly sessions are often more effective than isolated treatments. This is not an acute emergency treatment — patients with suspected intracranial pathology, new-onset thunderclap headache or headache with fever and neck stiffness should proceed directly to emergency care.

Riboflavin, B-complex, CoQ10, methylated B12/folate

Who Is This For?

Migraine, chronic tension headache, migraine prophylaxis, magnesium-deficiency headache, complement to food intolerance elimination

What's Included

Pre-infusion physician assessment of headache pattern and relevant blood markers
Physician-customised IV formulation (IV magnesium sulphate, B2, B-complex, methylated B12/folate for MTHFR patients)
IV catheter placement and administration over 30–45 minutes
Vital sign monitoring and pain level assessment throughout
Post-infusion recommendations on preventive oral supplementation and dietary triggers

Preparation Required

Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your appointment — do not arrive fasted. Drink at least 500 ml of water in the hour before the infusion. Bring a list of all current medications (especially migraine drugs: triptans, ergotamines, preventive drugs) and supplements. If arriving during an active migraine, inform the clinic when booking so a quiet, dim treatment room can be prepared. Do not drive yourself home if your migraine is severe — arrange transport.
