Digital X-ray (Skiagraphy)
Digital skiagraphy (X-ray) is a first-line diagnostic imaging exam that uses a small dose of X-rays to capture images of bones, joints, the chest and other tissues. The differential absorption of the beam across tissue types is recorded on a digital detector, producing high-contrast images of fractures, lung conditions and skeletal problems. At the MEDIAG department inside 1. poliklinika Karlovy Vary the workstations are fully digital, so images go straight to high-resolution diagnostic monitors and the PACS network rather than to film — meaning lower radiation dose and no developing chemicals. X-ray here is offered on a walk-in basis during working hours, so a referral can usually be imaged the same day without an appointment.

Ultrasound (Sonography / USG)
Ultrasound (sonography) is a non-invasive, painless imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves rather than radiation to look inside the body in real time. It is used to assess soft tissues and organs — the breast, thyroid, liver, spleen, muscles and blood vessels — and can show movement such as blood flow. The MEDIAG department at 1. poliklinika Karlovy Vary runs three ultrasound workstations equipped with Toshiba Aplio and Siemens Acuson Antares systems, operated by physicians with long experience in soft-tissue scanning. Because no ionising radiation is involved, ultrasound is safe to repeat and suitable in pregnancy. The result is usually discussed with you immediately after the scan, and a report is sent to your referring doctor.

Diagnostic Mammography
Diagnostic mammography is a low-dose breast X-ray performed when a woman has symptoms — a palpable lump, pain, nipple change or another clinical sign — to investigate the cause. The MEDIAG department at 1. poliklinika Karlovy Vary images on a GE Senographe Pristina, a top-tier system designed for the lowest dose on the market and greater patient comfort, with DUETA patient-assisted compression that lets the woman help control how firmly the breast is compressed. The same unit offers 3D tomosynthesis without any increase in radiation dose, giving the radiologist layered images that can reveal findings hidden on a flat 2D view. This is the only site in the Karlovy Vary region able to follow up suspicious findings with SVAB stereotactic vacuum-assisted biopsy, so sampling can be arranged at the same centre.

Bone Densitometry (DXA)
Bone densitometry, or DXA, is a quick, painless scan that measures bone mineral density to assess the risk of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. It uses a very low dose of X-rays to compare the density of your bones — usually the lumbar spine and hip — against reference values. The MEDIAG department at 1. poliklinika Karlovy Vary scans on a Hologic QDR Discovery whole-body densitometer, with the exam taking about 10 to 15 minutes and requiring no special preparation. A whole-body scan is also available for patients with metabolic bone disorders or after a transplant, with the exact protocol decided by the indicating doctor. You lie still on a padded table while the scanner arm passes overhead; there is nothing to insert or inject.

Screening Mammography
Screening mammography is a low-dose breast X-ray for women with no symptoms, used to detect breast cancer early — often before it can be felt. It is offered to women aged 45 and over and, in the Czech programme, is covered by public insurance once every two years with a referral. The MEDIAG department at 1. poliklinika Karlovy Vary is an accredited screening site that has run the programme here since July 2003 and has completed more than 150,000 screening exams. Imaging uses the same GE Senographe Pristina with 3D tomosynthesis and DUETA patient-assisted compression. Around 80% of screens give a final answer from the mammogram alone; the remaining cases are recalled for supplementary work-up such as extra views, ultrasound or biopsy — all available on site.
