Free and Total PSA measurement to help screen for prostate cancer and monitor prostate health.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the prostate. Levels can rise if there is a problem with the prostate, particularly in prostate cancer. PSA is a useful screening test for prostate cancer but it is not perfect. Many men will have a high PSA but not have prostate cancer. Some men will have a "false negative" result – a normal PSA when there actually is underlying cancer. Even if your PSA is normal, see a doctor if you have symptoms such as difficulty passing urine, getting up at night to pee, or feel that you are not emptying your bladder properly. The test measures total PSA level and free PSA level; the ratio of these two is a good indicator for your GP.

Who Is This For?

Men over 50 (or over 40 with family history) for PSA prostate screening. Anyone with a family history of cancer who wants baseline marker levels. Cancer patients monitoring treatment response or screening for recurrence. Health-conscious individuals incorporating cancer markers into their annual screening protocol.

What's Included

Specific markers depend on the panel ordered
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) — for men
CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen)
Additional markers as specified by provider

Preparation Required

No fasting required for most tumor markers. For PSA testing: avoid ejaculation for 48 hours before the test, avoid vigorous cycling for 48 hours, and don't test during a urinary tract infection — all can temporarily elevate PSA. Inform your provider of any recent medical procedures.

IgE kU/L

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a protein associated with allergic reactions that is normally found in very small amounts in the blood. IgE functions as part of the body's immune system (its defence against 'intruders').

Free PSA ng/mL

Measures only the unbound PSA in the blood.

Free/Total PSA Ratio %

Calculated by dividing Free PSA by Total PSA and dividing by 100.

PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) ng/mL

A protein produced by prostate cells. Elevated PSA can indicate prostate cancer, but also benign prostate enlargement, prostatitis, or recent ejaculation. PSA velocity (rate of change) and PSA density add diagnostic value.
