A 30-minute targeted laser treatment for facial pigmentation, sun spots, age spots, and uneven skin tone, using selective photothermolysis to break down melanin without damaging surrounding tissue.
Pigmentation laser treatment uses the principle of selective photothermolysis — targeting a specific chromophore (melanin in pigmented lesions) with a laser wavelength that is strongly absorbed by that chromophore while leaving surrounding, non-pigmented tissue unaffected. At BellaDerma, the pigmentation laser protocol addresses sun spots (solar lentigines), age spots, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, freckles, and general uneven skin tone on the face. The laser emits short, high-energy pulses that are absorbed by the melanin granules in keratinocytes and melanocytes within the pigmented lesion. The rapid temperature rise shatters the melanin into smaller fragments through a process called photoacoustic disruption, which the body's lymphatic system then clears over the following 1–3 weeks. The overlying skin darkens temporarily (the classic 'coffee ground' appearance) before the fragment-laden cells are shed, revealing clearer skin underneath. The precision of selective photothermolysis means that each pulse treats only the pigmented target — the surrounding skin, blood vessels, and deeper dermis are not significantly heated. This contrasts with ablative resurfacing approaches, which remove the entire surface layer. The result is effective pigmentation clearance with minimal risk to the surrounding skin and a much shorter recovery period. Superficial lesions such as ephelides (freckles) and solar lentigines typically respond well in 1–2 sessions. Deeper pigmentation, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma components, requires a more gradual approach with multiple sessions to avoid rebound hyperpigmentation. A free consultation at BellaDerma assesses the type and depth of pigmentation before recommending a treatment plan.
