Fat-dissolving injection therapy for the double chin uses deoxycholic acid — a bile acid that occurs naturally in the body and is responsible for dietary fat emulsification. When injected into the submental fat deposit (the fat pad beneath the chin), synthetic deoxycholic acid disrupts the phospholipid bilayer of fat cell membranes, causing cell lysis and permanent destruction of the fat cells in the treated area. Unlike diet or exercise, which shrink fat cells without eliminating them, fat-away injections permanently reduce the number of fat cells in the target zone. The treatment at BellaDerma is performed with a grid injection technique using a fine needle, distributing small volumes of the solution at multiple points across the submental area. Local anaesthetic is incorporated in the formulation to reduce discomfort, but a mild burning sensation during injection is normal. The destruction of fat cells triggers an inflammatory response over the subsequent 2–4 weeks as the body removes the cellular debris — this manifests as swelling, firmness, and occasionally bruising in the treated area before the final contour emerges.
