Intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal for the upper lip targeting hair follicles in the growth phase to produce progressive, long-term hair reduction. A fast 15-minute session suitable for regular treatment cycles.
IPL hair removal for the upper lip at Ästhetik Institut Berlin uses broadband pulsed light (typically 500–1200nm, filtered to target melanin) to selectively heat and damage hair follicles in the anagen (active growth) phase, impairing their ability to produce new hair. The principle — selective photothermolysis — exploits the fact that the melanin pigment in the hair shaft absorbs the light energy far more efficiently than the surrounding skin, converting it to heat that propagates down the follicle to the dermal papilla. If the papilla reaches a sufficient temperature (around 70°C), it is permanently damaged and can no longer sustain hair growth. The upper lip is one of the most commonly treated areas for IPL hair removal because the hair in this region is typically dark and coarse relative to fine facial vellus hair, making it a good absorber of light energy, and because the area is small enough to treat in a single 15-minute appointment. The handpiece is placed on the upper lip and fired in a series of overlapping pulses, with each pulse covering a 1–2cm² area. A built-in cooling mechanism protects the epidermis during treatment. Because IPL only affects follicles in the anagen phase (approximately 20–30% of upper lip follicles at any given time), multiple treatment sessions are required to catch the full follicle population across different growth cycles. A standard course for the upper lip is 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. After completing the initial course, maintenance sessions every 3–6 months address any follicles that were not permanently damaged or that have reactivated. Side effects are generally mild and transient — temporary redness, warmth, and very occasionally pinpoint crusting at follicle sites, resolving within 24–48 hours. Patients must avoid sun exposure for 4 weeks before and after each session and should not wax, pluck, or use epilators between sessions (shaving is permitted). IPL is most effective on dark hair against light skin (Fitzpatrick I–III); patients with darker skin tones or light, grey, or red hair may require Nd:YAG laser as an alternative.
