High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) face lifting treatment that targets the SMAS layer to stimulate deep collagen remodelling and tissue tightening. A non-surgical alternative to face lifting with results developing progressively over 2–3 months.
HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) at Ästhetik Institut Berlin delivers precisely focused ultrasound energy to the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) — the same fibromuscular layer addressed surgically in a traditional face lift. By targeting this deep structural layer without breaking the skin, HIFU achieves a degree of tissue tightening and lifting that is not possible with surface-only energy treatments. The HIFU device focuses multiple ultrasound beams to converge at a precise focal point below the skin surface, generating a small zone of intense thermal coagulation (65–70°C) at a depth of 3.0mm, 4.5mm, or 1.5mm depending on the transducer used. At the SMAS depth (4.5mm), this thermal injury triggers a wound-healing cascade: fibroblast activation, new collagen synthesis, and gradual tissue contraction as the newly formed collagen matures. The treatment does not damage the overlying epidermis or dermis because the energy bypasses these layers to converge only at the target depth. The clinical result is a progressive tightening and lifting of the lower face, jawline, neck, and periorbital areas over a period of 2–3 months as neocollagenesis proceeds. Patients typically notice a subtle immediate tightening effect on the day of treatment, but the primary result develops gradually and peaks at 3 months. A single session at Ästhetik Institut Berlin takes 60 minutes. Most patients achieve satisfactory improvement from one session; a repeat treatment after 12–18 months is recommended to maintain results as natural ageing continues. HIFU is most effective for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who are not yet candidates for surgical face lifting but want a meaningful structural improvement beyond what surface-energy devices can achieve. Contraindications include active skin infections, metallic implants in the treatment area, and severe skin laxity where surgical correction would be more appropriate.
