Additional Information

This panel provides in-depth screening of thyroid function and looks for evidence of autoimmune disease with a thyroid antibodies test. Thyroid hormones regulate metabolism – the rate at which the body uses energy. The body has a feedback system that controls thyroid hormone production. When thyroid antibodies interfere, it can lead to Hashimoto thyroiditis or Graves' disease. This test measures thyroid hormones and antibodies to assess thyroid function and identify potential autoimmune issues.

Biomarkers Tested (8)

Reverse T3 (rT3) (ng/mL)
Inactive form of thyroid hormone T3; does not bind to receptors and blocks T3 action. Increased levels may indicate stress, illness, or calorie restriction.
FT3 to Reverse T3 Ratio (Ratio)
Higher ratio indicates efficient T4 conversion to active T3 and less conversion to rT3.
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) (mIU/L)
Communicates with the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4, regulating metabolic functions. High levels indicate hypothyroidism, low levels hyperthyroidism.
Free thyroxine (FT4) (pmol/L)
Measures freely circulating thyroxine regulating metabolism. High levels indicate hyperthyroidism, low levels hypothyroidism.
Free triiodothyronine (FT3) (pmol/L)
Measures freely circulating triiodothyronine. High levels indicate hyperthyroidism, low levels hypothyroidism.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) (IU/mL)
Antibodies against thyroid peroxidase, an enzyme in T4-to-T3 conversion and synthesis; positive results may indicate Hashimoto's disease.
Thyroglobulin antibodies (TGAb) (IU/mL)
Antibodies against thyroglobulin; positive results may indicate Hashimoto's or Graves' disease.
Thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI)/Thyroid receptor antibodies (TRAb) (IU/L)
High levels of TSI can indicate Graves' disease.
